Questions and answers regarding higher studies

Last 2 days i got few emails from Junior KUETians. I post the answers via KUETian group so that it will help to others.

#Question:
rahman vai,
i have joined in the kuetians group recently.i want to do a higher
study in canada.unfortunately i can not afford a scholarship for my
poor CGPA.so i have to do it by bearing all the cost by own.i want to
know about Canadian universities.if u provide me some advices and
which subject i should complete my MS it would be very helpful for me.
#Answer:
Welcome in KUETian group. As you have ability to bear the costs go online to canadian university's
web site and apply directly. As you have to bear all costs so its better to admit the universities out side of Ontario state. Because the tuition fees of Ontario's universities are double from other states. Also if you can earn good result (minimum A- , 80%) then you will get university's scholarships and you can joined with any professor's research team. So take IELTS as soon as possible and search website for admission criteria, tuition fees, background of that universities etc. I don't have idea about the subject of EEE.

#Question:
Dear brother,
I have completed my graduation on February 2008 from ECE. Now I am very much interested to study in canada. Will you give me some information about the admission process? My CGPA is 3.69. Is it feasible for me to get any scholarship? I have not appeard for IELTS. Is it mendatory?
Take care.

#Answer: Congratulation for your very very good cgpa from KUET!!!!!!!! Yes you are highly capable to admit in any Canadian universities and feasible to get scholarsip . All the informations for admission are exist in universities website. It varies from 1 varsity to another varsity. As you have very good cgpa try to convince any professor. Also you can apply directly for MASc. As you have time its better to take IELTS. No, IELTS is not mandotory for every university. But its better to have IELTS.

#Questions:
my questions are
        1. this CGPA is enough for getting scholarship(my cgpa is 3.52 ECE-2k3)?
        2. if i want to bias a teacher , how can i start ?
(please write details . it would be nice if you send a format.)
3 . whats the procedure to select a teacher (some days ago
knew from my friend that muslim teachers are more effective for
             muslim) , muslim or others?
4.please give me deatil information, which university need not ILETS(if you
          have) ?
       5. i  read all mail which you sent in KUETians. there you wrote if you
have financial support, come canada. my condition is not good but if i
try i will manage some money .if i want to read canada without
schoolarship ,how much money i need (for full course)?
        6. if i will manage  1year / 1 semester cost , is it possible continue my
            study to earn money?
#Answers:
1.Yes your cgpa is enough for getting scholarship.
2.I gave a format on last February. If you don't have email me again. Also you can attach your RESUME to the professors.
3.Its a really tough question. Its not always true. My professor is a Muslim but 2 years ago he had 5 Chinese students. But yes most peoples are more or less Nationalist/resist.
4.So far i know Ryerson (my university) and Dalhoisie university(in Canada) don't ask officially for IELTS. Other universities officially ask for IELTS but if any professor will recommend you then you will be accept without IELTS in any universities. But its better to take IELTS to improve ENGLISH personally.
5.Tuition fees and other costs are vary from one university to another. But in average it is approximately $ 20,000(CDN) or BDT 14,00,000 per year.
6.It is quite impossible to earn money and do good result at a time. I don't wanna give advice to do work and study at a time. But if you can earn good result at least A- or more than 80% (its not so tough in Canada) then you will get scholarships.

Good. Luck all Kuetians. Pray for me please.

Study in Abroad - Dont loose confidence if GPA is low

My CGPA is very poor (2.95). Is it possible for me to get any scholarship?(i think it is a dream!!!).

Ans:
As your GPA is below 3.0 so I think its better you first write to
Professors and tell that you were very much much involved in reseach
and projects so you ignored little bit of you GPA. Thats why you
gpa is not better. But You strongly believe that you hold a very
promising research credentials. By this way mail to as much professors
as you can. Try to convince a professor. Tell about everything you
have done in your student life i.e. reseach, papers, projects, seminars, etc.
Hope you would soon get some responses. Prof. are gentleman and they
do reply to mails.

I want to complete my Masters degree in software Engineering and I completed my thesis on Software Engineering and we are writing a paper. i cant decide whether i should start study for IELTS or for GRE. please help me to take decision.

Ans:
If you want to apply to Norh America
especially USA then GRE is a
must. And GRE and IELTS are different type exams and serve different
purpose. TOEFL & IELTS are same type and for English proficiency test.
And GRE is like an admission test for Noth america. For USA/CANADA
GRE is needed with TOEFL & IELTS.

Which country will be suitable for me UK/Canada/USA/Australia/Sweden/Germany/Italy?i want to mention here that my family will be able to provide me
maximum 8 lakh BDT. is it enough or not? with this financial condition
and with this poor CGPA which country will be suitable for me?

Ans:
Its better if you apply 2/3 good unversites of US/CAN & AUS and in Europe.
And look for which univ invites you. I think for CS graduates US has
most prospect. But if you dont get any scholarship then you will have
very less chance to get a scholarship there. And in USA scholarship in
in MS is very rare.
In that case CAN is better and professors give
scholarships in MS level. You can also move to US from CAN also.

And AUS is also good as that is english spoken country and I am not sure
but so far I know the job situation for UK is not Good.

And for Europe the tuition fee is less or no tuition. But I am not sure about the
job opportunity for CS graduates.

i want to inform you that i have some good projects and
i also completed some extra projects which were not included in
the academic syllabus (Such as Finger print identification System,
Hand Written Character Recognition System and so on). will this
help me anyhow to get any favour?

Ans: Yes those shuld help you most. Mail to professor with those project
details. Convince the prof. who work in these fields. You should get
reply for sure. Start mailing.

Am i eligible to get any job as lecturer in any private university(B grade
or C Grade or lower class university in Bangladesh)? please provide me some
details information(specially amount of money).

Ans: I think your GPA may be a prob to get a teaching job. But if
you can mange some link or lobing then it would be possibe to get
a teaching job for you.

Study Abroad (North America, Europe, Australia) Informations

Regarding the requirements of TOEFL/GRE/IELTS and
CGPA for higher study. I try to put the information in a nutshell:

1. For commonwealth country (Canada, Australia) IELTS is mandatory. The
lowest score is usually 6.5 (band). The higher the score, the better
chance you have.

2. For USA and Europe the TOEFL is mandatory. The minimum score is
usually 215.

3. For USA only you need a good score in GRE.

4. The minimum CGPA requirements is 65% usually. But often students with
more CGPA then this could not get the fund. It depends on the relative
quality of the applciations a university gets and sometime interest of
the professor.

5. If you have any CGPA over 3.50 with a IELTS/TOEFL/GRE score, you are
a good candidate for funding in many world famous university.

6. Any publication/research work/involvment of research
project/professional experience can be an added qualification to boost
up your application.

To Study Abroad--Why GRE/TOEFL/IELTS

Shishutosh Bhai is undoubtedly right regarding lack of interests of
our KUET students in these standardized English Tests like
GRE,TOEFL/IELTS. At the same time I would like to thank Khaled Bhai
for pointing out the disinterests to English spoken countries and
topics important to higher study especially in CANADA.

I want to share with you two. My opinion is as students around the
globe apply for scholarships in USA/CAN/AUS so universities are very
much eclectic to pick up the right people for them. As standard of
education often do fluctuates among countries so these standardized
tests plays a cardinal role for digging up a scholarship.

Shishutosh Bhai told that you got offer from very renowned
universities of USA but missed that opportunities due to lack of GRE
score. You see most average BUET students plans for USA and have their
GRE exams in 3rd/4th years. But we KUETians try to find short cuts for
scholarships without GRE & TOEFL/IELTS. I think there is no short cut
for life & success follows hard work.

Anyway I want to accrue up some points below with you two for current
students of KUET.

#1. *GRE+TOEFL required for USA.
[Even US citizens need GRE to get into graduate programs(MS+PhD) with
or without scholarship]
USA provides the max no. of scholarships around the world even
students from CAN/UK apply for it. Opportunity is most as the are
having the Top class Industries theres. A lot of BUET average graded
students going without spending a penny & only upon scholarships.I
personally know few of them.

#2.TOEFL/IELTS is english proficiency Test (different from GRE & TOEFL
is required with GRE those who apply for USA)& required for
International student having mother tongue not English (Yes! there is
some exceptions & very little students are exempted for outstanding
academic records and by managing Professors primarily in AUS in CAN)

#3.Candaian Universities sometimes ask for GRE scores(Top most like
Uni of Waterloo+ Uni of Torento). And either TOEFL/IELTS will do in CAN
universities.

#4.IELTS score is preferred to most Austrelian Universities & some
universities also allow TOEFL score.

For prospective students of KUET

#5. If anyone is interested & seeking scholarships then please
complete this GRE/TOEFL/IELTS before 4th year and apply in 4th year so
that you don't waste a year.Universities will allow the academic grade
sheets upto 4-1. GRE is valid for 4 years. You can sit for TOEFL/IELTS
even just after passing.

#6. Anyone can apply to Ph.D. programs in USA after B.Sc. No need to
complete his M.Sc.(Its a MS+PhD program). If you get admission in PhD
programs you are sure for full funding-Tution+Living+Others.

#7. GRE will take few months preparation with vocabulary building

#8. TOEFL (iBT)/IELTS will take not more than 1 month high
practice(Each having four parts-Reading/Writing/Speaking/Listening)

....I think its better taking preparation for these Tests rather
wasting time in gossiping or roaming around Khulna city...And student
life is the best time for these exams and you will always have buddies
to have practice in campus. Best luck for all my juniors and to all
Kuetians. Together We lived. Regards.

Study in Australia

Nice to see your inspiration to KUET graduates those are looking for higher study in oversees. I much appreciated for your initiatives. But, I would like to make some modifications in your mail regarding study in Australia.

First of all regarding IELTS score, I agree with you most of the Australian Universities has higher IELTS requirements. But, still some Universities are accepting lower IELTS score. In context of getting scholarship, I think it’s a narrow thinking regarding not to approach for scholarship application in Australia by thinking have to get 6.5 in IELTS. In all over the world has high competition for scholarship, so student those are looking for scholarship they have to show their capability by getting higher English score. So, they can get advantage in scholarship competition. As I have got several experiences in scholarship application, we think that we have good marks in our undergraduate so we can get scholarship in overseas. It’s a wrong idea. Most of the overseas University can’t recognise level of the developing countries educational institutions. That’s why when they got application from developing country then first of all they look for English qualification of the student followed by their academic results. I can see lots of rubbish students studying with scholarship from many countries they don’t have good academic results and talent, but they have good score in English. I strongly believe that we have lots of talent, but due to lack of initiatives we are away from lots of opportunities. We just need some sort of initiatives and most important things is that to earn higher English score. I can’t believe those have good result in academic why they are so afraid for getting higher English score!!!!!!!. I can see several mails from Rony(CSE 98), he is straggling to give the prove of our educational standard. This is the fact. You see when someone asking to show our educational standard, we are unable to do that. So, how can overseas good Universities judge us based on academic result, especially those are looking for scholarship. That’s why when overseas good Universities see that student have good English score and at the same time they have well academic result then they don’t feel any hesitation to recognise as a good student from a good university. One of the good examples is myself, when I applied for PhD in USA, Canada and Australia, at that time I got a offer from Uni of Arizona, Uni of Washington, Uni of Nevada Los Vegas, Penn State Uni in USA, Uni of Western Ontario in Canada, and Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia. But, Universities from USA asked me to submit minimum GRE score. At that time I felt laze to appear GRE test and decided to come in Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia. Look, at that time if I had GRE score then I could get lots of opportunity. Just for English or GRE score we are getting off from lots of opportunity and from other countries student getting opportunity for their English score. So, why we should think about this such a narrow point? I strongly believe that once you will have good English score along with good academic results then you will have big amount of opportunities.

Regarding scholarship format in Australia, they have lots of scholarship opportunity, but we don’t know that. In four English speaking countries such as USA, Canada, UK, and Australia they are doing educational business. They like to see student as a self-finance. Study in all four English speaking countries need to pay high tuition fees, but I think more or less they are similar. As far I have experience with USA, UK and Australia, I think in Australia has lots of opportunity to work while studying, getting visa and future compare with others. If you have scholarship then you can still work for 20 hrs per week in Australia. In 2007 Australian govt. has given 330 IPRS scholarship. If someone interested they can contact with me, I can help them for application procedure. Here I have given some scholarship links:

At the same time students can see others great scholarships in Europe, I have given the link below:

Regarding living standard in Australia, I think the idea is not like that. In context of weather, Australia has one of the great living weather in the world, not so cold and not so worm. In compare with earning, Melbourne is one of the living standard cities. Lots of higher qualified people are migrating in Australia(including our previous KUET faculty member). You may know about one of our generous Dr. Kabir Patwary, recently he moved in Melbourne with family. Picklo sir is also here from few years before and Harun Bhai(lecturer KUET, he was 93 batch), he is coming this month. You may also know about Dr.L.R.Khan(prof in ME dept during engineering college), he is working in my Faculty(Victoria Uni).

Regarding racism in Australia, I think you may face racism more or less in all over the world. I have experience in Belgium, UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, Luxemburg and Australia. In compare with all I think in Australia you can face less racism problem. I can give you a good example is that so many Universities in Australia has prayer room for Muslim to do their prayer during the class period. Specially, I know in Victoria University and RIMT.

So, we should encourage our KUET graduates to take the opportunity from all over the world. We shouldn’t advise them to concentrate in one region. It will create greater opportunity for our graduates. I much appreciated such an initiative for our KUET graduates in once again.
