GRE math test - some suggestions2

As Raihan covered almost everything, I would like to add few words about GRE as I have just finished GRE two weeks before.

I have finished up with 1270 on GRE (Verbal 510 and Quants 760). I am really disappointment with my Quantitative score as I was expecting at least 790 in this section. But, anyway, I have finished it. So, I will suggest you all not to take math so easily, though the questions were really easy in the final exam excluding few. I had almost 10 questions common from dr.rajus gre. But, I felt some real difficulty on data interpretation questions. Because, the sites or forums usually don’t discuss more about data interpretation questions, so I really did not practice them more. Also, one normal distribution problem appears for which I did not have any answer. You can’t just solve them without preparing beforehand.

I had only 30 days to prepare for the GRE. So, I concentrate more on Verbal. And for verbal the original exam was really tough than the software’s available in the market. I was frequently scoring 550-630 in the model tests, though I was not good at all in reading comprehension. But the final exam was so tricky. Say, I knew all the antonym meanings appeared in the test, but it was really confusing to choose the best answer from the 5 available options. Among them 2-3 answer could be a certain choice. So, it took enough time for me and I saw that I need to answer 12 questions in the last 4 minutes. Then a long format reading comprehension appears. So, I just click them without really have looked at the questions. Like that I finished 6 RC questions in 1 min. So, I had 6 questions left and 3 minutes remaining. The rest were just antonyms, analogy and sentence completion and I was always good in those three sections.

So, based on my experience I will suggest the novice GRE learner to target reading comprehension first. Solve at least one RC problem every day and then analyze your difficulty and record them. I really did not get enough time as I am continuing my MS now (busy with experiments and other ideal works). But, scoring 500+ or even 600+ in verbal seems to me is not a tough deal if you put some time for GRE. And for math, prepare extensively and practice every kind of problems.

And finally schedule your exam on the last day of the month (and especially last day before the weekend). And solve all the questions of that month from dr rajus gre before your arrival at the test center. This is all about my personal experience, so please don’t make it ideal.

GRE math test - some suggestions

I am guessing most people are familiar with common GRE math materials like
Barrons, Nova, Official GMAT (math part), Big Book, Kaplan, etc. I would like to
add some more.

Solve lengthy time consuming problems, a lot of geometric and basic statistics.
You can try maths and other things with http://www.majortests.com/gre/ . I am
assuming you have taken Power Prep tests(cd you got from ets GRE registration),
if not try those. I would recommend collecting cambridge gre CD which has lots
of lengthy maths. After all do not be disappointed if you feel you can not solve
some hard questions. Because there are questions in the world and none can solve
it. And you would not need to correct 28 questions to get close to 800 but
definitely make sure not to make mistakes with the first 10 or so questions (1
wrong answer might be ok) as this would select the score range for you. And
leave questions which would be hard and you guess you might not be able to solve
even if you give 3 minutes.

There is a saying like no questions with more than 2 minutes and do kind of
timing like
"first 10 within 15 -18 minutes, next 10 within 12 - 15 minutes, last 8 with 10
to 12 minutes".

If you do not follow timing, I bet you won't be able to finish math in time and
end up with low score. If you are stuck with hard questions, just leave it. You
should not be able to answer those questions probably even if you give 10
minutes on that. I guess leaving two or three questions would be fine and would
allow you to correct other questions on time.

Again if you do not score perfect 800 that is fine, 750+ is Ok. But if you
stress yourself too much to get 800 and miss one question during the test, you
might be nervous and do very bad in the test, even you can get less than 700. So
try your level best.

Remember GRE is also a kind of nerve/stress test. Drink a lot of water and keep
yourself cool. :)

Absorb GRE vocabullary through google image search

To read new word is a boring task but it can be made easy one when you visualize through image. Here i set one example, i am sure when anyone see the word DORMER it is too abstruse to understand but when see the image it is very easy to grasp. You can get image through google image search by the link.May be you will get more help by this procedure to absorb new word.

Dormer means window projeting from roof

About Gre

Take my salam. Hope u will guyz are fine. Here is a little share of little
knowledge about GRE. Today i will say only about verbal part. Only and only a
very enriched vocabulary will ensure good score. Most of the guyz says Barron's
enough but i would suggest for reading Barron's Plus with 4842 words as i know.
The fact is that how much does one need to cover all these words. This thing
varies from person to person..but i would suggest that rush through the words
within 60 days(only the Barron's not Barron's plus). As u will complete the
Barron's list initially, it will much easier to grab the rest of the words then.
But i would suggest not too take much time because our brain needs frequent
revision. Some flash card or vocabulary builder software are available in the
net or simply search through the links that i mailed previously. The fact is
that u have to know all the primary,secondary,tertiary....meanings.Its important
because u have to face the analogies, sentence completion, reading
comprehension...so there's left no alternate way.
For others all have some definite structure. Sentence Completion (Barron's
explanation); Analogy ( Nova's explanation); Reading Comprehension ( Nova's
explanation): all the explanation there & u need to read them carefully and
practice according to the instructions otherwise u will mess up everything. If u
wanna crack the Reading Comprehension part the best approach is to solve the
GMAT Official Guide questions coz they are harder and there are explanations for
all the answers. Don't go after solving a huge huge materials go for only around
500 questions for all the sections logically and according to the hints & tricks
given in those books otherwise u will be screwed up. Coz u have to build the
skill as u will get only similar pattern questions.
The basic algorithm as far i konw they (ETS) will surely grab ur level in around
15/16 questions. So u have to atleast correct most of them otherwise ur score
will be poor. I know so many Indians who did extremely well;they made their
preparation within 6/7 months. So don't be hesitated and don't go after the rumor
as High Scorers take a huge preparation for 2/3 years. Yeah only a few u will be
found but 95% of the all go for 6/7 months preparation and i am assuring it. The
most important fact that will furnish ur score is ur luck( Allah ki Rahmat). But
u have to work hard 1st coz Allah helps those who Helps themselves( saying of
Jim civil-2k4...). As u may actually u have to guess the answers in the xam and
there's always of chance 50-50. Coz the computer understands the right answer as
it comes from ur guess or memory or ur diligent work. But don't be hesitated.
I will keep mailing about it frequently till then bye.

Actually there are so many links u may find out...but my suggestion is that
don't go after so many just stick with some 4/5 books that suits you very
best....

for today i can say only one thing.....

1. Complete the Barron's word list first(mandatory)
then u have to go through the BIG BooK words list ....there u have to
memorize extra around 1500 words.....if u wanna get a superb score in Verbal
Section.
There no definite way to memorize the words. My suggestion u should apply every
technique...going through the words, listening audios, get the GRE PIC
DICTIONARY(2500 words) there;find out every way...

2. Maths easy;but don't neglect that...coz its need a lot of practice.

GRE math

Do not forget to practice from www.majortests.com. Try to finish all the tests within the set time bound. Again these days math are pretty tougher than the problems you would see in Barrons+Kaplan+PowerPrep+Nova. Big Books are old enough to rely but worth practicing couple of tests from there.

I would recommend looking into the Test Magic forum.

http://www.urch.com/forums/gre-math/

People from all over the world discuss math problems and solves here. Give a shot. You might find some user designed hard math tests here.

I would practice some big lengthy questions as I found questions more lengthy , even 10-15 lines to interpret. You would sometimes need more than a minute just to understand the problem. Practice those lengthy questions for time management. The more fast you are the smart you are, only if you solve correctly. :) So timing and accuracy both goes hand in hand.

Try to download *GRE Cambridge Software*. Best Software to practice real GRE type lengthy and some hard questions. Again you can use
"Official GMAT" book for some big and hard questions. [This book is also very good for practicing verbal passages]

I would practice like this:

Preparation Part 1:
1) Barrons Math (Not the last 5 tests) - for complete idea
2) Nova GRE (Skip some very easy parts)
3) Few tests from Big Book (Do not forget to read the instructions at the beginning[before the tests start] of the book for "Quantitative" part)

** DO learn a lot from basic statistics(bayes theorem, etc), geometry(even ellipses, parabola, etc ), permutations, combination, etc from HSC books, if possible from O/A level math books. No available GRE books discuss about hard stat, geom, per/com problems but you would find a lot of those in your real exam.

Preparation Part 2:
4) Test Magic Math forum every day to be updated (most helpful to understand real GRE type questions)
5) Official GMAT (for lengthy questions/tricky)
6) Kaplan - for tricks

Tests
7) 800scores.com (download 5 tests)
8) PowerPrep Software (it is not only two tests. you would find some new questions every time you open a new test)
9) 5 last tests from Barrons
10)www.majortests.com [real tricky GRE questions]
11) Cambridge GRE Software (For lengthy and real GRE type questions)

It seems like lot of work. But it is worth practicing. If you do not practice more and more you would run out time or stuck with few problems just for not knowing the formula/tricks

It would not take more than a month to practice math. Good luck.

GRE resource in rapidshare

GRE Strategies (mostly for Quantitative)

I would like to write about GRE Quantitative(Math) section. I guess someone who is taking GRE preperation find this mail helpful.

GRE Quantitative(Math) section

I guess you all know the most important part of GRE is math for Engineering students. Even 750 is not enough. It is quite achievable to reach near 800 if you practice well and learn techniques to solve problems quicker(A lot of people make it 800.).
You should find mostly secondary level questions and some higher secondary level questions. And they will put only those questions which are possible to solve without calculator. So do not worry about not being allowed to use a calculator. For the difficulty level, I guess they test how fast students are with calculation. (I mean if you know multiples of 12 to 20[Namta] that is good. If you know square root of 5, 7, 11...13 that is good)

And know 25% of any amount is just 1/4 *(Amount) do not solve it like 25/100 * (Amount). Just multiply 3/4(75%) or 1/2(50%). Try save time in as many ways as you can.

Practice the  Data Analysis(Graph) questions and those take time to solve. Before you jump to questions analyze the graph at least 1/2 minutes and this will help you to quick pick up the answers for the Graph.

Do a lot of geometry problem. Know the basic rules of Ellipse, Parabola, Hyperbola and circle of course. Do a lot of probability and and basics of statistics. At least spend a month for Math. Now a days no math comes which is of standard of Barron's Book and definitely Big Book is obsolete (Do not do even a single math from Big book.). Then what book to follow? Well finish every lines from Barrons to get a raw idea on types of math that people find at real GRE Exam. But believe me you will get much more tougher math questions in real exam on your test date. Then why Barrons? Because it will give you a lot of strategies and tricks to solve common problem types. Finish doing Barrons Math section first. Then I would go for "Kaplan GRE" for math tricks. Then the most important thing is practice test. DO as many practice test as you can. Very lengthy math questions are to be found in GRE exam now a days. So I would recommend practicing tests for Math from "Cambridge GRE" CD.You will learn how lengthy questions are possible. Do not practice from Kaplan/Barrons CD. Then the most valuable resource is www.majortests.com- practice all the tests from here. And definitely go for Power Prep(In power prep there is not only 2 tests. They have a question bank so I guess there is 10 tests. So every time you give Power Prep you would find new questions and some questions from your last tests.). Another good resource for real time GRE math questions should be http://www.urch.com/forums/gre-math/ They have a good discussion on math and test question analysis. See those.

Now "28 questions in 45 minutes"
You should definitely follow some strategies to meet the time constraints. As the 1st 10 questions are most important and on those you should be put into a score range I suppose. So be careful for answering those questions and allocate more time on those first few questions. There should be some questions that would require 3/4 minutes and  30 seconds or less for some other questions. So you can not allocate same time for all questions. What you can do
is-

First 10 Questions ---- 15 min
Next  9 Questions ---- 15 min
Next  9 Questions ----  15 min

But if you make delay on one part then hurry on second part. For example if you take 17 min to First 10 Questions then make the next 9 for 13 minutes.(1st 10 questions are really important for getting good score as computer adapt your skill and score level mostly on those questions so you may make a bit delay on 1st 10 questions but do not take 20 minutes). If you are stuck with any question for more than 4 minutes then immediately leave it with answering the best option that comes in your mind. And remember you can score 800 even if you answer 1/2 questions wrong. So do not worry. But be careful. Math test is not too tough but tricky and trapped with silly mistakes. So be careful not to make silly mistakes. Do not try to recheck your answers after you got your answer because it will eat up a lot of your time unless you are confused with your answer.

And for difficult questions they will give you more score than easier one. So allow more time to difficult questions. One difficult questions may have 60 score where as 3 simple questions may have 3*20(for each question) = 60. And different type of difficult questions should come but most of them should be easy. But there might be 2/3 questions that should be really hard to solve in small amount of time or you can also find one or two questions that you might not be able to solve even after the GRE exam.:) So leave those very hard questions if you do not find answers in the exam even if you spend 3/4 minutes on those. Just leave those answering any options that you feel as correct answer. Do not get stuck even it is your 1st question. Leave it. Because 4/5 wrong answers might give you 780 score but if you spend 7 minutes on a particular question and ran out of time and at the end if you find you could not answer 7 questions and its 45 minutes you might get a score not above 700. So time management is very very important. Keep in mind it is not necessary to correct 28 questions to get a score of 800 as it is an adaptive test. You will get a score for your overall performance. So do not worry of answering 2/3 wrong questions but be sure finish in time. But both speed and accuracy is important. As much as you practice as you will be used to make a good score.

Probably you should not find any unknown question. But if you find one/two questions which you think is really impossible to solve or you are not finding any clue to solve simply leave these hard questions. And do not allocate more than 2 minutes as you know you might not be able to solve it. Again you will find some questions that you for sure know how to solve but you are not getting right answer right now in the exam time. Do not be crazy "Why can not I solve it? What is wrong with me? I am good at mathematics." It will downward your score as you will spend good amount of time and probably not be able to solve it even after 5 minutes and it will bring tension on you mind and your exam will hamper a lot. If you can not solve your known questions even in 3/4 minutes simply leave those. Leave those I say.:)

Always remember two points.
#1. You can get 780+ even if you miss 3/4 questions. So leave impossible(unknown) questions and known questions those you can not solve even in 4 minutes. (Try not to spend more than 3 minutes and 1/1.5 min is standard time on in average  but answer some easy questions even in 10-30 seconds.)

#2. You will try hard to reach upto 28 questions to answer as answering (wrong or right) all questions also has an impact on your score.

Some thing about Verbal Section:

Practice from Kaplan GRE and give practice tests from www.majortests.com and www.number2.com
Let me tell you resources for particular topic of verbal section after you finish Kaplan Book and  those two websites above.

Reading comprehension- read literary articles from www.aldaily.com not scientific articles or not from news papers. Read fast and try to pick up the meaning of any sentence fast. There should be at least three passages to answer in verbal section. Unless you can read first you will not be able to answer those passages (commonly 40-80 lines) quickly. You should definitely practice from Big Book Reading comprehension.

Analogy - Kaplan sample analogy questions, majortests and number2.com test questions and analogy part of Big Book.

Sentence Completion - Barrons sample sentence completion questions and number2.com and Power Prep's sentence completion is good.

Antonym- Its easy. As you know meaning so antonym is easy. Practice from Big Book.

For verbal section Big Book is Good to practice.

Writing Section

I would also recommend you to prepare for the Writing section- Issue & Argument.
You can buy Arco GRE for writing. Remember there is no spell checker in the Editor in GRE exam. So be careful for spelling and be sure to revise the writing and do not forget to  allow 10 minutes for revision after you complete the writing. Do not panic for few spelling mistakes. Its Ok. Revision is most important. When ever you are giving any opinion try to give some practical example to support your opinion. This will give you good score. I would recommend you to see the sample answers for Issues and Argument that Power Prep generate after you finish taking the practice test. See how to write and what carries good score.

And one thing is that there is a topics list(Issue Pool & Argument Pool) in ETS/GRE site for both issue and argument. Probably here

You will find Issue & Argument questions from this list in your real exam date. So I will recommend you to look into each topic and try to guess what you will write to these topics on the real exam date. Doing so you will feel good as you will get the same question from this pool given in GRE site. At least be familiar with the topics and think about them.

*Do not forget to see this mail before your real exam date.* :) Best luck.

The Study schedule I followed for GRE

I noticed a few posts and mails asking me how I prepared for the GRE.I
had written a post earlier mentioning what I did to study Quant and
Verbal but I guess it got lost in the deluge of congratulatory mails.

1) Verbal

a) Wordlists : I believe this is the most crucial part of your
verbal preparation .You will have to find a way to memorize all the
words and ensure it sticks in your head. What I did was to go through
all the word lists and mark the words I didn't know .Then I took 5
word lists at a time and typed out the words which I had marked along
with their definitions and any secondary definitions. When I was
finally done I had 10 pages named liked this
wordlist1-5.txt,wordlist6-10.txt and so on.I took a printout of those
pages and when ever I had free time I spent some time studying
them. Please note you will have to find the method which suits you best.

b) Analogies and Sentence completion - The GRE big book
containing 27 real question papers can be your best friend for
this. You should be able to get it from esnips.com .Also do a Google
search for GRE verbal questions. You will be able to find a lot a
practice material

c) RC's - I think the big book is the best source for RC's and you
can always get material from other GRE study books. The GRE throws
rather abstract subjects at you so try to widen your range of
interests by taking an active interest in science, art and
literature. The New York times is a very good site to frequent and so
is the editorial page of the Hindu

d) Antonym's - It basically depends on your vocabulary,so work on
covering the word lists well and improving your vocabulary.

2) Quant - I really cant give much advice on this since I struggled
badly with it in the exam but please note it has become harder than
what the test papers and the powerprep softwares suggest. However

a) Be clear with your concepts and definitions ,if you dont know
what a prime number is or that 1 is not a prime number then you are
asking for trouble
b) Ensure you know your formulas well
c) Practice as much as possible

Raghu had posted a very good suggestion regarding how to prepare for
Quant,I would like to post it here with his permission " For those
that are yet to take the GRE, here's a little tip from me: for the
quant, try ALSO to practice from books that train you for the CAT (the
Common Aptitude Test, entrance exam for IIMs and many other
B-schools). These books typically have a lot more than necessary for
the GRE. So, practice only relevant sections. The problems in these
books are rather hard and the GRE these days requires one to have this
kind of muscle"

3) Essay writing : The best thing to do is to Practice and do try to
do the essay under timed conditions so that you get accustomed to
it.Also check out the sample essays in powerprep to see what standard
they anticipate

Books used by me :

1) GRE Barrons 17th edition
2) Barrons essential words for the GRE by Philip Geer
3) Norman Lewis - Word power made easy
4) Time (CAT) material for permutations and combinations and
probability
5) Quantitative aptitude by RK Aggarwal - Used this mainly as a
formula reference
6) Some GMAT study material I found on the net for mathematics,You
can find it on esnips

Softwares

1) GRE bible
2) Powerprep
3) Kaplan GRE 2005 CD
4) Vocaboly

How GRE Test will help you for your life

I would like to write on GRE issue. I hope it might help the current
students or those who want to go for a Higher Study.

-------------------------------
Importance of GRE :
-------------------------------
GRE-Graduate Record Examination

To apply for MSc or PhD programs GRE is a like an entrance exam or
admission test. If you do well in GRE, it seems that you are doing
well in an admission test. So your chances become higher for getting
an admission as well as scholarship to World Leading Universities.
Even students form USA or CANADA require GRE for their MS and PhD
application.

Which universities ask for GRE?
Ands: GRE test is required for most of US Universities (around 95%)
many Canadian Universities(around 65%), some European
Universities(around 30%), in Japan I don't feel GRE required but it
is good if you have GRE score. Even for applying to IIT, India GRE is
required.

GRE would not only help you for Higher Study but also help you for
the following two primary issues:

#1. If you think you would apply for IBA MBA. GRE preparation would
cover both the Math and verbal section of IBA test. If you plan for
staying at Bangladesh you can plan for a MBA. Engineering + MBA is of
high demand.

#2. A lot of job recruiting exams for example in Telecom sector,
especially in case of written test, it is based on quantitative or
analytical practice which is very similar to GRE test.

Now Few Frequently Asked Questions(FAQ) and Answers about GRE
-------------------------------------------------------------
Ques: What are the parts of GRE ?
Ans: GRE Test comprise of 3 sections.i.e. Quantative Section/Math (of
800 marks), Verbal Section(of 800 marks), Analytical Writing Section
(of 6 points)

Ques: Do you need to give both GRE and TOEFL/IELTS or only one?
Ans: Both GRE and TOEFL/IELTS is required for applying. To apply for
MSc or PhD programs GRE is a like an entrance exam or admission test.
If you do well in GRE, it seems you are doing well in an admission
test. So your chances become higher for getting an admission as well
as scholarship to World Leading Universities. Even students form USA
or CANADA require GRE for their MS and PhD application.

Ques: Which one I should take with GRE? TOEFL or IELTS ?
Ans: TOEFL or IELTS are similar type of Tests and required only for
those students whose native language is not English like Bangladeshi
students. You can take either TOEFL or IELTS. In case of USA there
are few universities which allow only TOEFL not IELTS. Other than
that in all over the world both IELTS and TOEFL are allowed. The
preparation is almost same and variation may be in question patterns.
But the matter is that if you take GRE then TOEFL or IELTS is not
that much to prepare again. I took my TOELF (Internet based) exam
with a four days preparation after my GRE exam. So concentrate on
GRE and don't worry much of TOEFL or IELTS. These exams are very easy
comparing to GRE.

Ques: How to start with GRE Preparation?
Ans: The first thing should be memorizing words for the verbal
section of GRE. Then practice quantitative(math). Now a days the math
secrion is very very tough. Do not ignore maths only because you are
an Engineer. Take at least one week preparation for analytical
writing.

Ques: What are the books for GRE preparation?
Ans: For words/verbal the Book :"Word Smart" by Princeton Review is
the ultimate weapon. It is a small and cheap book with near about
1500 words. Try to memorize all those with in 2/3 months. For
quantitative Barron's GRE is very good book. For verbal Barrons has
3500 words but the bad thing with Barron's GRE book is that it has
tough word meanings with tougher synonyms. So at the beginning do not
start with Barrons for verbal/word practice. Only after you complete
the 1500 most common words from Word Smart you can start Barrons if
you have time to prepare. If you complete both Word Smart+ Barrons
then you would get 1450+ for sure in GRE.

Ques: Which score is good in GRE?
Ans: Out of 1600(800 in math, 800 in verbal) above 1200 is good in
the sense that you must get 750 in math(which is most important for
Engineering Students) and a score with 450+ as our mother language is
not English. But for US/CAN students 600+ is required for Verbal
section. Anything above 1400 is superb score and you can apply to
University of California, Barkley with 1400+ score.
